How to Make Bathroom Tiles Shine Like New (India Guide)

Why Bathroom Tiles Lose Their Shine
New bathroom tiles look glossy and bright. Over months and years in an Indian bathroom, they develop a dull, cloudy appearance that no amount of wiping seems to fix. Most people assume the glaze has worn off or the tiles are permanently stained. In almost every case, the real cause is limescale.
A thin layer of calcium carbonate — just a fraction of a millimetre thick — completely changes how light reflects off a tile's surface. The glaze underneath is usually perfectly intact. Remove the limescale and the original shine comes back.
The Two-Layer Problem: Limescale and Soap Scum
Indian bathroom tiles typically have two layers of deposit:
- Soap scum — a fatty, slightly sticky residue formed when soap reacts with calcium in hard water. Appears as a grey or yellow film. Responds to surfactant-based cleaners.
- Limescale — hard, chalky, white mineral deposits underneath or on top of the soap scum. Does not respond to surfactants. Requires acid to dissolve.
Most tile cleaners only address the soap scum layer. The limescale underneath remains, keeping tiles looking dull. A complete restore requires addressing both layers.
The Full Tile Restoration Process
What you'll need:
- The Natural Company Tap Cleaner (citric acid-based spray)
- A soft microfibre cloth
- A soft-bristle brush for grout lines
- Clean water
Step 1: Dry the tiles
Wipe tiles dry with a cloth. Remove all standing water. This is important — wet tiles dilute the cleaning formula before it can work.
Step 2: Spray generously
Apply The Natural Company Tap Cleaner across the full tile surface. The foam should cover the tile evenly. Pay extra attention to the lower portions of walls and floor tiles near the drain where deposits are thickest.
Step 3: Wait 30–45 seconds
Let the citric acid do its work. You may see very slight fizzing where the acid contacts heavy limescale deposits. This is the chemical reaction dissolving the calcium carbonate.
Step 4: Wipe with a damp microfibre cloth
Use a clean damp microfibre cloth and wipe in straight lines. The dissolved mineral deposits and soap scum will lift away. Rinse the cloth regularly.
Step 5: Treat the grout
Apply spray to the grout lines and work in with a soft brush. Grout is porous and holds deposits deeply. Let it sit for an extra 30 seconds before wiping.
Step 6: Rinse thoroughly
Rinse the entire tiled surface with clean water. A handheld showerhead is ideal for this. Make sure all product residue is removed.
Step 7: Dry immediately
Use a dry microfibre cloth or squeegee to dry the tiles before water droplets evaporate and leave new deposits. This step makes a significant difference to the final result.
For Heavily Stained Tiles
If your tiles have years of accumulated deposits, one application may restore 80% of the shine. Repeat the process immediately for the remaining deposits. In extreme cases, 3–4 applications over a few days will restore the full shine.
Keeping Tiles Shiny: The Weekly Routine
Once restored, tiles stay shiny with a 2-minute weekly spray, wipe, and rinse. The biggest secret to permanently shiny bathroom tiles in India is frequency — weekly light cleaning requires no effort and prevents the heavy build-up that requires restoration.
