Why Your Showerhead Gets Blocked — And How to Fix It in 5 Minutes

Why Showerheads Get Blocked in India
If your showerhead is spraying unevenly, producing a weak stream, or some nozzles have stopped working entirely — limescale is almost certainly the cause. India's hard water (typically 300–600 ppm TDS) deposits calcium and magnesium minerals inside the tiny nozzle holes every single time you shower. Over weeks and months, these deposits accumulate until the holes are partially or completely blocked.
This isn't a quality issue with your showerhead. It happens to every showerhead in hard water areas, regardless of brand or price.
The Wrong Way (That Most People Try)
Most people try one of these approaches — none of which actually work:
- Poking the nozzles with a pin — This physically breaks the deposit but doesn't dissolve it. The fragments can re-block the hole downstream, and you risk damaging the rubber nozzle.
- Running hot water through it — Hot water doesn't dissolve calcium carbonate. It may actually accelerate deposition.
- Scrubbing the face with a brush — Cleans the surface but doesn't reach inside the nozzle.
The Right Way: Citric Acid in 5 Minutes
Limescale is calcium carbonate — an alkaline mineral. It dissolves readily in mild acid. Citric acid is the safest and most effective option.
Method 1: Without removing the showerhead (fastest)
- Turn off the shower and dry the showerhead face with a towel
- Spray The Natural Company Tap Cleaner generously over the entire face of the showerhead, making sure the foam gets into every nozzle hole
- Wait 2–3 minutes (longer than for taps, because the deposit is inside the nozzle)
- Turn the shower on full pressure — the water pressure flushes the dissolved deposits out
- Repeat once if any nozzles are still blocked
Method 2: Soaking (for severely blocked showerheads)
- Fill a plastic bag with The Natural Company Tap Cleaner diluted with a little water
- Secure the bag around the showerhead with a rubber band so the face is submerged in the solution
- Leave for 15–20 minutes
- Remove the bag and flush with full water pressure
How Often Should You Descale Your Showerhead?
In hard water areas (above 300 ppm), descale your showerhead once a month as part of your regular bathroom cleaning routine. If you do it monthly, the deposits never build up enough to block the nozzles — a 30-second spray is all you need. If you leave it for 6 months, you'll need the soaking method.
Can Hard Water Permanently Damage a Showerhead?
Yes, over time. Calcium deposits inside the valve mechanism can cause the showerhead to seize or fail to adjust between spray modes. Regular descaling prevents this and can extend your showerhead's life by years.
